Witnessing Relational Classroom is a series of pedagogical sessions developed for 'Hear! Here!'a critical pedagogy platform for teachers and staff of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Sandberg Institut. This series of conversational meetings focuses on the positionality of a teacher in a classroom where equitable exchange is encouraged.

Starting with the pedagogical proposition that witnessing and holding change enables learning, we simultaneously use these ideas as metaphors and strategies to complicate our role as tutors in a relational classroom. Focusing on the positioning of teaching bodies bodies formed and acting in between institutional urgencies and the urgencies held by our students their needs, sensations, burdens, joys and commitments.

The sessions, informed by practices of walking, reading, cooking, silencing together and corresponding, stay with the following questions: What can bodily tuning contribute to horizontality within a classroom? What type of hierarchies are experienced by teacher bodies? How can we be sensitive and accountable for the equality of voices and knowledges in this classroom? What are the means of an equitable exchange that lie outside the institutional linguistic hegemony? And what does it really mean to lead and be part of a relational classroom?
